Opening Scene Initial Ideas

genre ideas- Unit 22/Unit 1

The mind map that i have created within the software on google "www.bubbl.us.com" helped our group hugely on deciding what type of genre our group should chose and what type is suitable for the availability and accessibility of materials we have. From making this mind map, I explored the advantages and disadvantages of the common genres we could have chosen and helped us narrow down to our chosen genre ‘Horror’/'Psychological thriller'. Despite choosing horror, the mind map made our decision quite tough to choose from, for instance with Sci-Fi genre we did like the idea of as the advantages to it was very intriguing, however the whilst looking at the disadvantages too it came across to us that we could never pull off the opening successfully and our school simply not having the funds and materials for us.

research into famouse film openings unit 22

The following mind map made on Bubbl.us was created by Liam P on our chosen genre identifying many aspects around it, he created the mind map after discussing as a group why we chosen this genre and the pros and cons of the genre to see if this genre was the best for us.

The following is a moodboard in which i have created myself, within it identifies a range of ideas around the opening of our film expanding upon our initial ideas/

The following is research Liam Pym has done into different types of famous film introduction sequences. While some of these examples have a higher scale of production, we can still use these as inspiration for our own introduction sequence

research into openings in single camera productions with a similar budget-unit 22

The following is an oppening scene within the film "lost signal". Within this opening scene the producers have done a superb job within the use of camera angles, for instance the use of having a low angle camera shot when he is walking through the woods looks very effective, also the use of having the camera watching him with the camera in the trees as if someone is watching him in first person looks very effective too. Furthermore, at the end of the scene the shot goes completely black after being caught by a man leaving the audience on a cliffhanger weather or not the man has hurt or even killed the man. In addition to this, the use of having the black out in my opinion would look very effective within our opening scene especially when the police knock on the door and then the ending is black with the name of our film would leave the viewers on a cliffhanger weather or not he will escape or gets caught.

The following is research I have done on my own looking at opening scenes of films with similar budget to ours and looking at effective techniques they have used and how we could use these in our own production.

The following is an oppening scene within the film "Inner Dead". Within the opening scene of inner dead, the opening is similar to how we want ours, with the man waking up suddenly after a flashback. From looking at this opening scene, the use of waking up from the nightmare (or flash back in our case) does in fact look very effect and leaves the audience wondering why she looks so panicked after the nightmare. Furthermore, within this opening scene the use of flashbacks they used did look very effective, as they were leaving me questioning why has this happened? Who is the other person? And also I wasn’t sure if it was a flashback or not until it was over which left me intrigued to know even more what’s happening which is the same effect were looking for with our flashback. Similarly to “lost signal”, the ending of the opening sequence went pitch black again with the name of the film just after we see the other character gets closer to her and this use of a cliffhanger leaving us wondering if she will be okay is very effective and I’m sure within ours we get the same effect.
