What is linear/Non-Linear Structure
What is A Linear Structure
What is A Non-Linear Structure
Within maths, “Linear” implies something to be in a straight line. Within a narrative, as the name suggests, a linear narrative structure essentially means the story follows in a straight line — starting at the beginning, moving to the middle and proceeding to the end of the story.
Examples Of A Linear Structure In Films
In contrast to a linear structure, a non-linear narrative often starts at the middle of a story or the height/peak of the conflict within the film. After the conflict is shown, the film then double-backs to the beginning. Within a non-linear film, they tend to use flashbacks, and flash-forwards as this keeps the reader intrigued throughout the rest of the film.
